In 1492 the Catholic Monarchs issued the Alhambra Decree, expelling the Jews from Spain. Four years later they were expelled from Portugal. The Iberian Jews could leave, convert, or be killed. Many of those who converted continued practicing Judaism in secret. These secret or crypto-Jewish traditions have persisted to this day.
