Spiegelman takes on why the animal metaphor and racial caricature are at the heart of this genocidal project ("Why Mice?"); and talks about why his personal past—rather than, say, a desire to ride current cultural trends toward victim-culture and "holokitsch"—made Maus a necessary work.
