Ashkenazi Jews have a ten times higher rate of mutations that increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women. These mutations also increase a man’s risk of developing breast and prostate cancer. Recent studies show that Sephardic Jews may also be genetically predisposed to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. The hereditary risk is in no way diminished if a person no longer identifies with the Jewish community.
